Description

We start things off on a slower tangent with Wez Clarke & Maxine Hardcastle’s “Walking With A Smile“, a track from Hed Kandi’s Beach 2008 compilation. If you haven’t got the album, get it. It’s perfect not only for chillaxing on the beach but for those times when you’re lounging around at home in the evening with a drink or two.

Next up is one of my favourite producers of all time, Joey Negro, delivering two stunning productions. The first is the belting disco-infused Sunburst Band with “Fly Away” which I can’t get enough of at the moment. This is quickly followed up by Z Records milestone 100th release, “Love Hangover“, which samples the classic riff from Diana Ross‘ 1976 hit by the same name.

After this, you’re treated to Steven Stone and the uplifting vocals of Andrea Love with “Good Love” from Stereo Sushi version 13 and an appearance from one of my favourite vocalists on the house scene Georgie Porgie with “Can You Feel That Sound“.

Following this is a sweet little remix of Mariah Carey’s “I’ll Be Lovin’ U Long Time” by DJRoman as part of the remix competition on Indaba Music - definitely my favourite among the many entries.

It’s not long before we cool things off a little with Sound Of Joy’s “Now Or Never“, a funky vocal number that is sure to get rumps shifting, then we turn things up a notch with the latest project from everyone’s favourite, Brighton’s Freemasons. They’ve snapped up the Funk Fanatics‘ “Love Is The Answer” on their Free Maison label, added their personal touch to the disco number, ready to throw it in to the limelight. I’m sure you’ll find that infectious loop will stick in your head for days!

Now it’s time to bring back those oh-so-popular commercial remixers Moto Blanco with a few tracks from their vault. First up is a track from last year’s World Aids Day campaign with Annie Lennox and a whole host of other famous ladies (including Madonna) getting the synth and strings treatment on “Sing“. This is shortly followed up with lady of the moment and sister of Beyonce, Solange Knowles and her fantastic new track “I Decided“. There are quite a few catchy remixes doing the rounds at the moment, including an impressive effort from the Freemasons, but it was Moto Blanco’s reworking that did it for me.

After Levi5 and Michelle Martinez treat us to “Third Time“, it’s time for Hed Kandi’s latest revival offering in the guise of No Halo’s “Put Your Hands On“. I can’t get enough of this track at the moment, mainly because of the sample from Johnny Corporate’s “Sunday Shoutin’“. Paul Harris, Ian Masterson, Therese and Lauren Rose have outdone themselves.

With Hed Kandi out the way, it’s time for some Audio Freak productions, starting off with Soulshaker’s remixes of Juliet Robert’s “Slow Down” and Kathy Brown’s “Sounds Of The City” then going into the Bassmonkey’s remix of Eugene’s “Falling” - three awesome examples of upbeat funky house at its finest.

Now it’s time for my favourite tune of all time on the remix with 7th Heaven. At first, I thought it was blasphemous. But after a few listens, I was convinced. It’s impossible to ignore the sheer power of Degrees of Motion and “Shine On“. You just try to not enjoy it.

From here on in, we get a little “Twisted”.

It commences with Jon Fitz’s remix of “Hesitate“, Richard Murray’s “Set Me Free” and Sasha Angel’s “Keep Shining“.

Regular vocalist Katherine Ellis makes a welcome return to the podcast featuring in McCall’s “Gotta Get Through” before Roxanne Wilde takes the mic in Milk & Sugar’s Summer anthem “No No No“.

You then get stung by the anthemic piano loops of James Dornan’s “Everythings Gonna Be Alright” and Brinsley Evan’s “That New Sound“, building you up into a real crescendo before I drop the collaboration of the season - Axwell, Bob Sinclar and Ron Carroll’s “What A Wonderful World“. While the original version is a little cheesy, the Dabruck & Klein remix oozes energy through the breakdowns and build ups.

After Out of Office’s “Insatiable“, we delve into the past with a fantastic and filthy 2008 remix of Cevin Fisher and Loleatta Holloway’s “Got Me Burning Up“. Any sensible DJ would have this tune in his box this season to ensure maximum bounce-factor in the clubs.

And why not wrap up the mix with tune of the Summer - Fred Falke’s remix of Defected’s success story that is The Montanas and DJ Roland Clark with “Music Talking” - perfect to bring the podcast to an end.

Since then, I’ve been overwhelmed with the sheer volume of thank you and good luck messages from regular listeners to the podcast, in the blog comments, on the Facebook group and event page, on email, Twitter and last.fm (to name but a few). It has touched me that so many people have not only listened to the podcast religiously but it has such emotional ties to the individuals. Some of the stories I’ve received in the last week have even put a tear in my eye.

Anyway, enough blubbing - I’ll save that for next week!

To celebrate the last ever One Phat DJ podcast mix, I’m putting out a request…

In fact, it doesn’t matter if you don’t see yourself as an artists or designer - send me your ideas anyway!

The September 2008 mix of the One Phat DJ Podcast will, unfortunately, be the last - ever!

It’s been a difficult decision to make after three years of podcasting but it’s a decision I have to make for the greater good. Personal circumstances have changed and the music and media industry are establishing tighter regulations with regards to sharing and broadcasting online.

I have gained a huge following from listeners worldwide, with positive support from producers, artists and label owners far and wide, even setting trends according to some.

As those close to me already know, it’s something I’ve been considering long and hard - I’m particularly sad about it, to be honest. I’ve loved producing the podcast, not only for the reception it receives but as I also thoroughly enjoy the music featured and especially enjoy mixing.

This isn’t to say it’s the end of One Phat DJ though - just the end of the regular podcast schedule. I shall be working to get back into DJing live around the UK so keep checking back to the official One Phat DJ website and Facebook Group for the latest on that. There are also several spin-off projects in the pipeline too - these will be announced as and when they’re launched.

So, be sure to download the final mix of the One Phat DJ Podcast, scheduled for release on Friday 12th September 2008 at 7pm BST. For those who are subscribed in iTunes, it will automatically download for you. For those who aren’t, what have you been doing all this time? Finally, thank you for all the support during the project. It couldn’t - and wouldn’t - have happened without the 1,800 regular subscribers and thousands of downloads every month. Knowing so many people were enjoying the music, eagerly awaiting each mix, has been my main motivation. It’s so rewarding it reached such heights, mostly for the love.

The mix starts off with a few mellow tunes from Koyla and the awesome Richard Earnshaw with diva Angie Brown but we quickly get up to speed with plenty commercial remixes from the likes of Estelle, Chaka Kahn, Mary J Blige, Ne-Yo and Jennifer Hudson.

We then revisit Hed Kandi’s The Mix Summer 2008 with some massive funky numbers from Steve Haines, ATFC and Housejack, the kind of tunes that should get rumps shifting and tonsils warbling.

If that wasn’t enough to get you going, we then feature one of the finest remixes I’ve heard in a long time - the Soulshakers reworking of the classic nineties track “Show Me Love” from Robin S. I think you’ll agree - our boys from Norwich have excelled in this production.

While we’re reminiscing on older tracks, London’s talented duo Moto Blanco have revisited X-Press 2’s 2001 hit “Lazy, adding in their trademark uplifting synths and beats to create a real uplifting remix.

The last hour introduces then turns a little twisted. We start off with the likes of the Studiopunks, Made In London and Tognarelli & Botani who all turn the heat up a little with some deeper grooves.

We’re also treated to more vocal blessings from the ever-lovely Amanda Wilson from her collaboration with Soulcatcher before going into another dance cover of a Beverley Knight track, this time Wawa and The Outsiders putting their touch on “Keep This Fire Burning“.

The last 45 minutes then go deep and dark with some awesome tunes from the likes of Captcha, Denis The Menace, Eric Prydz, Yoav and Laurent Wolf before we wrap everything up with a fantastic bootleg of Spit’s “Falling” and Kings Of Tomorrow’s “Finally” discovered by fellow podcaster DJ Cruze - I defy anyone to not love this tune!

Spread the Word

It’s quite an emotional moment for myself and, I’m sure, all the other guys involved. I never expected the podcast to be as successful as it has been, nor the respect it receives from the fans and industry. From far and wide, people from all over the globe are subscribed to the podcast and, without you, it wouldn’t be what it is today. I’m constantly sent messages from regular listeners which motivates me further to keep doing the podcast. I thank you all.

Now the speech is out the way, I have a few announcements to make about the podcast, by way of changing the format (again):

• After a six month trial, I’ve decided to return to producing the podcast just once a month.  There are several reasons behind this decision but, for you guys, it just means quality will come over quantity.
• Rather than limiting the mix to 80 minutes in total (originally for those who like to burn a CD copy for the car), I shall be extending the mix to a whopping 2 hour special. More time, more tunes!
• To keep all those CD fans happy, you will also be able to download an 80 minute edited version directly from the website with a CUE file for easy skipping.
• It’s time to scrap the formal naming conventions for the podcast too. House music is an art form. It’s about being creative. Let’s go back to the catchy names, starting with this one.

There are a few other ideas I am currently toying with so keep checking back for details. I know there will be disappointed listeners out there but that is life. You can’t please everyone.

With that out the way, let’s pick things up again and get listening to the latest in funky, soulful, disco and electro house. There are 23 tracks in this month’s mix so there is bound to be something for everyone.

Love it or hate it, you can’t deny the fact the Freemasons are still going strong and with the legend that is Katherine Ellis on vocals, “When You Touch Me” is sure to be anthem of the Summer so it’s only appropriate to commence the mix with this classic.

After Pat Rich Deejay and Francesca St. Martin have delivered a belting tune, it’s the turn of the newest UK girl band on the scene, The Saturdays, and Moto Blanco’s remix of their track “If This Is Love” - a track I’m giving my full backing for the coming months. Keep your eye out for two S Clubbers in the line-up…

We’re then treated to the latest monster track from vocalist Amanda Wilson with Simmons and Christopher on the remix as well as a cover of the dance classic “Teardrops” from producers Love Assassins.

After an exclusive remix from One Phat DJ Favourites Bassmonkeys of Ali Bertash’s “Let Me Go“, we go into another smash Summer hit from Italian DJ-cum-producer Alex Gaudino and his updated remix of “Watch Out” which features some samples from Perfecto Allstarz 1995 anthem “Reach Up (Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag)“. I thought there was nothing wrong the original album version to be honest but its great to hear the track make commercial radio and a huge success in the clubs.

This is shortly followed by another track that has been doing the scene for a fair few months but has only just made it into the limelight. Now with an updated and banging remix from Manchester producers Wideboys, Connected and Max C’s “A Feeling” is sure to get your feet or heading moving as we go into the last 30 minutes.

After more treats from the likes of Sound Control, Back To Fundementals, Deemah, XSS and another exclusive remix from the Bassmonkeys‘ alter ego Liquid Nation, we turn things up another notch with Smax and Gold’s remix of Soul Seekerz “Reach For The Love” before going into the return of anthem-makers David Guetta, Chris Willis and Tocadisco’s latest offering “Tomorrow Can Wait” to wrap up this extra long mix.

The whole package is wrapped up with another fine piece of artwork from our guest artist for June, Gemma Barton, who has produced this fantastic, bright and vivd illustration to accompany the tunes and Summer feeling. That’s not to say I’ve been lounging around doing nothing. There have been literally thousands of tracks released to check out in the mean time and I’ve been a busy bee going through them all, sorting out the musical treats to grace your lovely ears.
