Our Babs is back with another astonishing vocal hit having teamed up with Andrea Paci and The Winning Triplet. Great soulful uplifting track to start this week’s selection. Expect big things!

Freemasons - Love On My Mind (Carl Crème & Reza Remix) [Hed Kandi]

The original version of Freemason‘s debut track has clearly been established as a milestone track in the house music scene, regularly raising the roof whenever it’s dropped. For the recently released Hed Kandi Classics compilation, Carl Créme and Reza were commissioned to put their special touch to it and, I have to say, it’s a belter. Expect it in the next Funky House Finesse show.

Funkstar – Turn The Beat (Original Mix) [Tasty Recordings]

Fantastic resampling of the classic 1976 disco track from Vicky Sue Robinson (or Gloria Estefan if you’re that way inclined), turned up to 11 for, well, 2011. Great hooks and build ups make this a perfect club track.

Ministers De La Funk – Gravy (Original Mix) [Subliminal Records]

The behemoths that are Erick Morrillo, Harry “Choo Choo” Romero and Joze Nunez return to create a massive new house track in the (strangely) named “Gravy“. As you’d expect, the impeccable production and vocals of the delectable Shawnee Taylor make this a club banger. Love it!

Deeply Fierce

Last week, Fierce Angels released a new range to their compilations called Deeply Fierce.

Mark Doyle – the main man behind Fierce Angels – started a similar style of compilations back in his Hed Kandi days which went on to become the successful Stereo Sushi and (well-known) Twisted Disco compilations which just goes to show how desirable this house styles are within the house music scene.

The release of Deeply Fierce also welcomes a slightly different format to the Fierce Angel compilations – the return of two discs. Over the years, Fierce Angel have generally released 3-disc compilations (accept for the occasional A Little Angel teasers). From now on, they’re attempting to focus on quality rather than quantity which should also allow for more frequent releases.

The new disc count also coincides with the new partnership for the record label, now taken under the wings of Strictly Rhythm. Strictly have been working hard over the last five years (almost simultaneously with Fierce Angel) to introduce more independent angles in house music so it’s good to see the two labels recognising the value in each other, working together to distribute quality house through their different channels.

On with the music…

The two discs are split into two distinctive styles – the first a more laid-back deep sound, almost soulful at times; the second taking a more electro-slash-deep direction, almost trance towards the end.

Disc one is definitely more my bag. The first three tracks get you warmed up beautifully with tracks from Tommy Bones, Karin De Ponti and Newland. Things start to take a more uplifting vibe from here on in. Some of my my stand out tracks include “Get Ready” from David Penn, Jabato and DJ Roland Clark (how could that collective get anything wrong?) and Eric Kupper‘s remix of “How To Love” by Peyton, DJ Kolya and Mutaya.

Disc two takes a more sinister look into house music, definitely the darker of the two discs. That’s not to say quality is compromised…

Sidelmann‘s remix of Asle‘s “Thank You” has been on my playlist for month’s now – a fabulous vocal treat with a twisted vibe. With Jean Claude Ades and Sam Obernik‘s “Work Of Art” and “Anthem” from Ruff Loaderz and The Hayman added into the mix, you’d be hard pushed to find a more intensely enjoyable collection of deep house tracks.

It has to be said the track selection is second-to-none. Mark Doyle takes the listener on a thoroughly enjoyable through house music and I think by reducing the compilation down to two discs, it’s allowed the team to focus on track quality. I, for one, welcome this new direction.

Awesome remake of the classic Stevie Wonder track by this young Czech producer, remixed by the master that is Stonebridge. It’s quite a twisted number but, oh my – what a club banger in the making.

I’m not normally one for commercial remixes but Dave Doyle has a real knack for adding some handbang house fun to everything he touches (remember his remix of Beverley Knight’s “Moma Used To Say” in Finesse 39?). Just try not to move your ass to this remix of Bluey Robinson.

Audio Jacker & How2 Groove – Fashionista (Original Mix) [Tasty Recordings]

Talk about a disco reprise? Audio Jacker and How2 Groove have come up trumps on this fun-tastic jackin’ remix of the disco sample. Great vibes as part of an excellent 3-track “Dance Dance Dance” EP from the guys.

Raw Essence – Do You Love What You Feel (Cleptomaniacs Remix) [Z Records]

This classic disco house track from 2000 has been dug out of the Z Records archives and re-released in digital format. Excellent hooks and uplifting vocals have made this one of my favourites for the week, if not the month. Also available on Beatport.

This week we are doing something a little different from usual whereby we are introducing a guest to choose the tracks. The person in question is a long-standing lover of the monthly podcast, as the last time I checked he had every single mix of the show to date. That’s some commitment!

So, with that said, it’s time to hand over the reigns this week to Guy Hollidge and let him pick a few tracks from the present and past to wet your whistle. All these tracks are from his own personal taste of house music, but you shall not be disappointed.

Ferreck Dawn – Sometimes (Original Mix) [Spinnin' Deep]

Well I currently can’t get enough of this track. Its chilled beat but upbeat track has had my feet and body moving all the way to Beatport.

Kenshyro – Sky City (Marquito Remix) [MAP Dance]

I love a bit of back to love, as “disco will never die”. I stumbled over this track by chance whilst surfing though Youtube. It is a fantastic track and makes me wish I was there to feel the love.

Marquito ft Duane Harden – Face it Now (Classic Mix) [Panevino Music]

Wow, now this is what I call a “TRACK”. This sound is what I go trolling through countless websites and music stores for. If only my friends loved house as much as I did. But I know you will appreciate this song!

G. Thomas – Don’t Stop Movin’ (Original Mix) [Spinnin' Deep]

Finally, this just screams Ibiza to me. This year’s trip to the White Isle was amazing. The sounds and flavours out their truly opened my eyes (and ears) to the truth behind house.

So enjoy and hopefully I will be doing more of these in the future (if Si allows me too).

Talk about a dream team!

Love this “nu disco” track doing the rounds at the moment. It’s got a great uplifting vibe about it with a true French disco sound. Definitely one to listen out for.

Weekly Finesse No 1

Every month, I meticulously hand pick the tracks to be featured in the Funky House Finesse mix show. I go through hundreds of tracks making sure I select the finest house music tracks for the show which, as you can imagine, is quite a chore (quite an enjoyable one at that).

By doing this, a number of tracks don’t make the cut. There’s nothing wrong with them – they just don’t fit in the set or we run out of time.

To get around this, I’ve decided to gather together my weekly favourites, compiling the Weekly Finesse.

This won’t be a radio show for now, just a published list of tracks available to purchase. We’ll see how it pans out though. If it works well, I’ll look into producing something a bit more easy to follow (audio or video).

Fierce Angel Es Vive Ibiza 10th Anniversary Edition

This week, Fierce Angels released their 10th anniversary compilation of their Es Vive Ibiza series.

I’ve been a huge fan of Fierce Angels over the years, following their every move and, more often than not, promoting them too. The pioneering mind behind it all, Mark Doyle, is a huge inspiration to me personally so I’m always keen to see what he’s been working on, where he’s hedging his bets and showcasing what he believes in and, most the time, I completely agree (with the occasional question mark).

When I received the promo copy of Es Vive Ibiza 10th Anniversary Edition last week, I swiftly unwrapped the cellophane, throwing the first disc into the car hi-fi for a “laid back” drive, expecting a calm collection of lounge house tracks. Needless to say, I was impressed. We’re talking really laid back with the first disc – the first half of the tune selection rarely break a beat – that’s how laid back we’re talking.

It was a pleasure to hear the Afterlife remix of the Afro Medusa‘s classic “Pasilda“, as well as the amazing vocal talents of Fierce regulars Cathi O and Soraya Vivian. Even moreso, finally hearing Bonnie Bailey‘s “Fall Into My Heart” on official release and Peyton‘s “Never Can Say Goodbye” gave me a warm fuzzy feeling, knowing full well how much anticipation has been behind the tracks.

As you all know, I’m a huge fan of disco house so disc two “Fierce Disco” was high on my agenda with this compilation. As expected, another fine collection of tunes to get moods rising.

I was lucky to hear the Bassmonkey‘s remix of Bonnie Bailey‘s “The Little Things” as an early promo (and stuck to my promise of holding it back before this release). It’s exactly how I remember discovering Bonnie’s style, reminiscent of the early Hed Kandi releases when Mark Doyle originally found the lady. I’m loving this track and hope to hear a lot more of it over the coming months. Needless to say, it will be getting my full support on the show.

Other stand out tracks on the Fierce Disco mix include Eric Kupper‘s remix of Melissa Indot‘s “China” and Oxford Hustlers remix of Martin Wright & Angie Brown‘s “Can’t Get To Sleep“, both belting piano house productions.

With the first two discs easily building me up into a crescendo, the final “Afterhours” mix had it’s work cut out to keep me going. Alas, it delivered.

I was actually pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the final mix. I enjoy full-on house music but I’m relatively picky about the tunes I prefer, especially as most tend to sound very samey. It’s safe to say that is not the case with the final Fierce mix of the selection.

The epic production from Erick Morillo, Eddie Thoneick and Shawnee Taylor “Stronger” kicks everything off in style which smoothly moves into the sublime Echogram “Walk In The Sun“. Further delights from John Dahlback, Abel The Kid and Jon Fitz make sure the whole experience reaches it’s full potential.

All in all, I’m really enjoying this compilation. It’s a perfect celebration of the last five years of Es Vive Ibiza, encapsulating exactly what Mr Doyle set out to achieve when he established his baby of a franchise. Fantastic track selection from Mr Doyle – kudos for your style, sir.

This week, we present an upcoming breakthrough act who go by the name of Souljackerz.

Made up of Matt Tsang and Stuart Braybrooke, these guys have already gained great support from the likes of Fierce Angels, Tom Novy and Stuart Ojelay (to name but a few) and recently won the DJ Mag competition to get one of their productions played at Space Ibiza.

They’ve been busy working on a number of productions, some exclusive collaborations and some cheeky bootlegs, some of which featured on previous Funky House Finesse shows.

They recently put together a special 2-hour guest mix for us to showcase some of their recent work alongside some fantastic new material. With a funky jackin’ element mixed with a Summery laid-back sountrack, this is right up our street so you should enjoy what they have to offer.
